Steady progress this week on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway at Woody Bay.
Earlier in the week, fresh ballast was dropped along the shoulders of various sections of the line, using a works train of HEDDON HALL and the ballast hopper.
Building up the shoulders of ballast helps to keep the formation in place as well as providing material nearby for the ongoing programme of spot tamping along the line.
A special Remembrance Day event took place at Woody Bay Station this week.
The children of Parracombe School came up to the station for a short service on the 91st anniversary of the exact moment when the guns finally ceased firing at the end of World War One.
The Devon group organises several social activities throughout the year. A report from the latest, and details of upcoming events are available from the Devon Group page. All welcome!
The Weather at Woody Bay was not as good as it has been recently, but work still continues apace.
The first 'winter' work party this year enabled major work to continue enhancing Woody Bay, further recreating the Southern Railway 1935 ambience of the station.
Two members the L&BR Trust's Surrey Area Group were on site all week working on their latest project which has been financed by their fundraising efforts from sales at shows and exhibitions throughout the Home Counties area recently.
Hosted by the Greenwich and District narrow Gauge Railway Society, Expo NG is an annual model railway exhibition held in Swanley, Kent.
Ron Hill from the L&B Essex group headed the L&B delegation over the Dartford Crossing into Kent. He reports:
I have been going the Expo NG for many years and knew it was the right place for the L&B to be, and were we busy! Quite often the public were standing three deep around the stand keen to know more about us and progress on the line.
The unseasonally mild, dry weather for half term week produced some healthy loadings on the trains this week, helping to further boost the 2009 passenger figures. Steam locomotive SID was running with three carriages.
The three year Powerpoint review presented by the MD to Trust Members at the recent Forum is now available online. Go to to the L&B Trust Members online page. You will need to be logged on.
A lovely autumnal day at Woody Bay today and the Thursday Group volunteers were tasked with a variety of jobs. In the shed Brom Bromidge and Martin Andrews continued the programme of moving equipment in the stores to the new mezzanine floor space. This will create a less cluttered environment in the shed when all locomotives and carriages are inside this winter.
