Remembrance Day - 11th November 2009 - Report

A special Remembrance Day event took place at Woody Bay Station this week.

The children of Parracombe School came up to the station for a short service on the 91st anniversary of the exact moment when the guns finally ceased firing at the end of World War One.

Each child carried a small wooden cross bearing the name of someone in their family who had served in the armed forces or the name of someone in Parracombe who had died in the First or Second World War, and at the end of the service they planted their crosses in the garden of remembrance on the down platform. For one young lad it was particularly meaningful: his father is serving in Afghanistan at this moment.

The event was also featured in the NDJ:

1. Before the two-minute silence Rev Keith Wyer, the vicar of Combe Martin, explained to the children the significance of the poppies they were all wearing.

2. Afterwards the children all went for a train ride behind SID before returning to school.
