The Weather at Woody Bay was not as good as it has been recently, but work still continues apace.
The first 'winter' work party this year enabled major work to continue enhancing Woody Bay, further recreating the Southern Railway 1935 ambience of the station.
Two members the L&BR Trust's Surrey Area Group were on site all week working on their latest project which has been financed by their fundraising efforts from sales at shows and exhibitions throughout the Home Counties area recently.
Prior to Thursday's work party Phil Rawstron and Peter Jones spent part of their 'holiday' at Woody Bay cleaning up and painting several parts of the ironwork for the down starter signal. These included sections of the ladder, platform and lamp.
On Thursday Martyn Budd was able to position the mini-digger at the end of the platform to dig the hole for the new wooden tapered signal post. Martyn was able to identify the exact position of the original railway signal after discovering the remains of the base of the ironwork of the old signal ladder during the digging of the hole for the base. The hole was dug and the new treated seasoned oak post lifted into place.
Phil and Peter, aided by members of the Thursday gang, then positioned the post correctly before packing and tamping a concrete base in the hole around the signal post. Later a shallow trench was hand dug across the grassed-over platform for the cable ducts.
Meanwhile S & T engineer Dick Gunn was already fixing the cable from lever No. 8 in the signal cabin via the previously installed pulleys across the track towards the new signal post.
