Autumnal scenes at Chelfham


This year the L&B Railways' "second" owned station at Chelfham continues to receive further garden maintenance and trackbed clearance by a few volunteers. Nigel Thompson went along to record a few autumnal scenes around the site including some of the original railway's surviving relics and views of the famous viaduct.

With the railway now closed to the public this week, there were just a few maintenance jobs to be carried out this morning before most of the Thursday gang enjoyed an afternoon site visit to the L&BR trackbed at Bratton Fleming.

Killington Lane Bridge Revealed

Killington Lane Bridge was revealed to the public for the first time on 29 October 2011 - in model form at least.


L&B Member Tony Peart exhibited his model at Expo-NG, a model railway exhibition dedicated to narrow gauge, organised annually by the Greenwich and District Narrow Gauge Railway Society.

The L&BR Trust's second station site and trackbed at Chelfham continues to be maintained by local volunteers. With much of the stored equipment in recent years having been gradually transferred or sold off , there is now an  opportunity to tidy up the trackbed for long term future use.  A very small group of volunteers have been busy this autumn cutting down and burning overgrown branches and rhododendron trees and clearing the trackbed route accordingly.

Industrial Steam Cleaner Wanted!

L&B General Manager Martyn Budd is hoping someone will be his Secret Santa as he has something he would like as a Christmas Present - an Industrial Steam Cleaner!  However, as he does not want to spend the L&B's precious funds on such a beast or start yet another mini-fundraiser (like that which bought the post hole borer) - what he is hoping is that someone, somewhere, knows where there is such a beast sitting unused and unloved.  If you know where one might be found - hopefully in working order - which could be made available to us for next to nothing, please do get in touc

Volunteer hours for Woody Bay in 2011 have been up on previous years and the attendance on Thursdays recently has reflected this. So now during the autumn the gang are to be tasked with a variety of jobs to continue to improve, maintain, and enhance the station and rolling stock.
