At a cold, windy and wintery Woody Bay Station today, the two very sensible volunteers stayed warm and dry by working inside on administrative duties. Dave Tooke and Dave Blencowe sorted out the Santa Special bookings by allocating the visitors and their children to the trains on the various days over the weekend and all next week. Some people needed to be contacted to confirm their bookings.

The 'outdoor' gang were tasked with another rolling stock project.

Chelfham Trackbed Clearance

For a change of scenery and location, the L&B volunteers of the Thursday gang re-located today to Chelfham Station to assist in the ongoing clearance of smaller trees overhanging the trackbed there.

With Martyn Budd and his dogs away this week on 'Railway business', it was up to Nigel Thompson to organise the work and mess room facilities at the station building. Catering manager Judy Williams kindly supplied home-made soup, rolls, mince pies and biscuits.

This week four members of the Surrey Group have worked hard at Woody Bay on their allocated project. An ex-MoD bogie flat wagon recently regauged from 2'6" was in need of frame refurbishment, repainting and new floor planks fitted. Phil, Peter, Nick & Richard spent their 'holiday' in North Devon derusting and painting the frames, then treating and fixing the cut planks into place.

Taking advantage of the railway's shutdown for a few weeks, General Manager Martyn Budd decided with the good weather today to begin the construction of the ash pit outside the shed. The excavator was unloaded ready to do the main digging work on this project.

Until now the steam locos have dropped their ash between the rails on either shed road, causing a gradual build up which has to be cleared periodically. The new ash pit will help to keep the ash in one place ready to be moved away and reused for the trackside paths alongside the sidings.
