North West Area Group at Preston Model Railway Show 3/4 March 2012

The L&B NW Group returned to the Preston Show this year, for their second visit.  Peter Ainley and John Berry were in charge on Saturday, with a display of Peter’s G Scale L&B models.

1. The main job today was to install a gulley drain in front of Woody Bay station which would help to prevent a reoccurance of the flooding inside last January. Nigel Thompson supplies some dry mix cement for Martyn Budd to fix the plastic gulley pipe drain in place.

Taking advantage of some bright sunny weather today, a few L & B volunteers of the unofficial "Friends of Chelfham Station" group enjoyed a useful day working on the trackbed and lineside tree clearance near the station and continuing the tidying up and removal of the laurel trees successfully carried out recently during the January working weekend.

With our regular Thursday reporter Nigel Thompson away for a few days, it fell to Graham Bendell to send in this Thursdays working party report.  

A good turnout of volunteers saw several tasks being tackled around the station area. Trains were running, there was a steady flow of passengers and, as a bonus, the weather was slightly warmer than of late. Yet more roadworks on the A399 caused several volunteers to divert from their normal routes to get to Woody Bay.

Many preparations underway today ready for the opening and running of trains during the February half-term week .

Inside Woody Bay Station the floor repairs after the flood were completed and new "lino" fitted.

Also, catering manager Judy Williams, reorganised the stainless-steel work tops and fridges into an easier to manage layout within the confines of the kitchen.

In the shed the engineers continued working on locos SID and diesel D6652.

L&B Talk in Central Manchester - 18th February 2012

Bob Barnard will give a talk to the North West branch of the Stephenson Locomotive Society on Saturday 18th February 2012 at 14.00. 

The talk is entitled "The Lynton & Barnstaple Then and Now", and aims to cover the history of the line, what has survived and what hasn't since 1935, and the recent revival of the line, including future plans.

The SLS meetings are held at the Friends Meeting House, Mount Street, Manchester, and all visitors are welcome.

Anyone in the area with an interest in the L&B is encouraged to attend.
