Almost summer like weather this week with hot and sunny conditions even in March! The railway opened for the 2012 season with steam locomotive SID operating with 3 carriages. A few visitors were about to keep Dave Tooke busy in the booking office/shop and Judy Williams with the tea rooms catering.

Thames Valley Area Group have been very busy of late with two recent presentations; March 19th Alcester Railway Circle where Chris Ward and Trevor Garnham explained the tremendous amount of work required just for the planning application.

Railway Children help rebuild L&B

A few weeks ago, L&B Trustee, Secretary and Railway Company director Tony Nicholson received a donation towards the L&B (see letter below) all the way from Scotland.

The March working party saw worked undertaken at 3 sites over the weekend in unseasonably fine weather - not the wind and rain that usually accompanies these weekends.

Volunteers Weekend and Locals Day

This weekend was a very busy one indeed at Woody Bay Station - as well as elsewhere - as it was the weekend when we look to recruit new volunteers, have a working weekend for the regular volunteers and for the first time ran a Locals Day promotion.  

We  received several enquiries regarding volunteering on the railway and these are to be followed up. Meanwhile those that arrived for the volunteer working weekend spent Friday fettling trackwork at Woody Bay, Saturday clearing the old Blackmoor Hotel site and returned to Chelfham on Sunday.

Work in Progress: 22nd March

Last week, planning permission was granted for a "permanent" marquee to be erected for the whole of the season at Woody Bay. Martyn Budd and the team at Woody Bay prepared the groundworks and drainage using the excavator, with a hired-in dumper to move surplus earth across to the woodland. This week, a crushed limestone surface was laid, leveled and rolled smooth.

The Underframe complete with bogies, brakes and coupling is now complete and will soon be dispatched to Great Yeldham.

With General Manager Martyn Budd away today on the IOW, Graham Varney and Nigel Thompson led the small group of volunteers tasked with some essential trackwork down the line in preparation for when passenger trains begin running again later this month.
