Volunteer Guard Steve Ball congratulating nine-year-old Harry Pitcher of Bristol for being the 250,000th passenger to travel on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway since it reopened in 2004.

Harry likes to go to Woody Bay as often as he can. "He's having a wonderful time," said his mother. "Everyone's so friendly here."

Taking advantage of a dry morning before the forecast rain arrives later, the Thursday ‘outdoor’ gang worked along the line changing a couple of rotten sleepers and adjusting the ‘shims’ at a rail joint.

The main project today for the 'Dorset' Thursday track gang was to complete the 2012 fishplate oiling programme along the line.



1. John Heys, John Villers and Graham Bendell (all of whom have a two hour plus drive to Woody Bay every week) work on a fishplate joint just below the car park.

The report of the scrapping of the body of the old L&B Association transit van brings back memories of over 20 years ago, although it does not quite date back to the 1980’s. When the North Devon Group was formed in 1990, one of the first tasks which it was asked to undertake was the restoration of a caravan, which would be used as the basis of a mobile sales and publicity stall, to be taken to local fairs and carnivals (report: L&B Magazine 33).

Michael Portillo delighted volunteers and holidaymakers alike today when he visited Woody Bay Station with his trusty Bradshaw while making his next series of Great British Railway Journeys to be shown on BBC2 in January. He had previously visited the West Somerset Railway and the Lynton Cliff Railway.

It was time this week for a somewhat depleted Thursday Gang to return to the L&BR's second station at Chelfham for today's work party. A couple of jobs were on offer as part of the ongoing clearing and tidying of the site. including the removal of a trailer load of scrap.
