The weather was heavy showers falling on the Thursday Gang this morning whilst work continued building the retaining wall behind the shed.

A fairly quiet day visitor-wise at Woody Bay, as the 2012 season begins to draw to a close. AXE worked the passenger train with driver Pete Williams, fireman Jim Price and Bob Ayres as the guard.

Oct

2012

Woody Bay (Radio) Station transmits from Woody Bay (Railway) Station.

The World's first steam powered passenger railway journey took place on 27th September 1825 - from Darlington to Stockton in the North East of England.

For the past several years, groups of radio amateurs have highlighted the event by visiting heritage railway locations (typically 20-30 venues each year) throughout the country (and some from further afield) to take part in "Railways on the Air" (ROTA).

Received this from our Commercial Manager and General Factotum, Dave Tooke - it certainly gives an insight into the amount of rain currently falling in North Devon and indeed elsewhere!

As something a little different from the norm, you may like to put on the website this report from a party of Rotarian visitors to Woody Bay who visited us on Thursday.

It rained all day today at Woody Bay severely testing last winters land drainage from the run off the A39 across the car park and under the track.  One outcome of the recent torrents was a small land-slip that occurred behind the shed.  It was decided to construct a retaining wall to prevent further slippages.

So despite the rain, the Thursday gang task for today was to create this retaining wall by first concreting-in posts made from retired rail sections, then fixing wooden slats in between the posts.

This selection of photos were taken on Saturday and capture the locos in action as well as some of the other attractions.

After the very successful Autumn Steam Gala last weekend, it was time for the Thursday Gang to return the railway at Woody Bay back to 'normal'. The tasks included putting away all the signs and taking down the extra marquees for storage in the shed, ready for the next Gala in May 2013.

It was also another operating day, with a steady flow of visitors including a couple of Shearings coach parties. The railway is open five days a week throughout October, (Closed Mondays and Fridays).
