Work in Progress: 3rd January

After a Happy New Year to all, it's time to prepare the railway for its short winter shutdown period. The "Santa" and "Mince Pie" Specials with LILLA working the passenger train went well. Despite the heavy downpours in the run up to Christmas, the railway seemed to survive well - without the need for major drainage repairs experienced a year ago.

Santa's Grotto was dismantled - the decorations were stored away earlier in the week.

Thames Valley Support Group: All Change!

Dec

2012

As you may know, the long-standing leader of the Thames Valley Group Chris Ward has now moved to North Devon.   Chris had asked me a number of times if I would be willing to take over from him - and as no-one else appeared willing to take on this task I agreed to do so.  I am conscious that Chris will be a very hard act to follow!

Work in Progress: Chelfham Station, December 2012

Dec

2012
Over the past month, considerable work has been undertaken at the L&BR's second station at Chelfham. The small 'Friends of Chelfham Station' group has continued the early restoration work in and around the station building.

There was a major tidy-up of the stored equipment outside including a scrap-drive of a number of unneeded and irreparable items. A trailer-load of scrap metal, combined with a similar clear-out at Woody Bay yielded a considerable sum for the General Manager's Equipment fund for future signalling, engineering and heritage projects.

Still cold, but a bright dry day. In order to keep warm and to shift and burn the cut down trees on the trackbed at Rowley Cross cutting, Parracombe, some of the gang were tasked with enjoying bonfires there.
