Grant success for THIRD heritage carriage

2007 - 2013: Europe investing in Rural Areas


Our application to Torridge & North Devon Leader 4 for a Grant for a third Heritage Carriage has been approved.

The grant amount of £96,600 provides 60% of the budget of £161,000.

With the design layout for the valve conrod and the rocking shaft  available Mike Nelson has now modelled the assembly in CAD and added it to the motion model. Mike has also detailed the parts ready for them to be made as the funds become available. The rest of the valve mechanism should be available soon.

The centre section of the chassis frame is now close to being finished with only the wheel bearing area left to be designed.

Winter Working Weekend: 23-25 November

Whilst some of us will be at a big event at Warley, another group of hardy L&B types will be in North Devon for the first Winter Working Weekend.

Friday: We return to Wistlandpound to continue the trackbed clearance. Meet and sign-in at Woody Bay at 9:30 AM, or proceed directly to site. Park at “Discover Wistlandpound” (There is a charge for parking!).

Saturday and Sunday:  Fencing repairs etc. on our new section of trackbed at Holwell. Park at Rowley Cross picnic site layby.

West Midlands Area Support Group News!

The next meeting of the West Midlands Support Group will be at 7.30pm on Friday, 30th November, at Kidderminster Railway Museum, where will will be given a talk by Mervyn Srodzinsky on railways in the Wolverhamton area.  As well as being an L&B Life Member, Mervyn is an acknowledged expert on the railways of the Black Country and he has a collection of hitherto un-published photographs. Non-members are also welcome to attend.

In the absence of our regular roving reporter Nigel Thompson, this week's report was sent in by another Thursday Gang stalwart, Graham Bendell who regularly undertakes the four hour round-trip from his home of Sherborne, Dorset to join the rest of the Thursday regulars in keeping the railway looking its best.


Yet another "glorious day" at Woody Bay Station - heavy rain, thunder and lightning, hail and a bitingly cold wind. However, we managed to accomplish the few tasks it was possible for us to do.

In the past few weeks the small informal "Friends of Chelfham Station" group have continued to look after the L&BR's second station. General garden maintenance and trackbed tree clearance are always ongoing, and tidying up of the site helps to restore the tranquil atmosphere of this attractive station.
 
As part of the station's restoration, the down platform foundations were excavated and revealed earlier this year.
