Whilst the railway remains closed to visitors, work continues on a variety of tasks in and around Woody Bay Station, the shed, and along the line.
1. Today the carriages are stabled out of the shed on the down platform line to allow space in the shed for the inside projects to progress.
2. During the operating season, South Somerset member John Heys was the usual 'Tuesday fireman', but today he returned to the Thursday Gang, to paint a top coat of SR Brown onto the third ex-MoD Box Van to be refurbished this year. This van will be lettered and numbered as SR No.47064.
3. In the shed much of the recently acquired signalling equipment is now being de-rusted, cleaned and painted. Dick Gunn examines parts of the lever frame due to be refurbished next. Other gang members later assisted with the this task.
4. John Villers worked on the recently acquired point rodding rollers. The rollers and brackets need to be stripped from their concrete bases.
Trackbed at Parracombe
5. A stunning view of Parracombe basking in winter sunshine.
6. This section of trackbed provides very attractive and scenic views of Parracombe village.
7. Just below the A39. The newly refurbished crash-barrier is clearly visible to the left.
8. Another glorious view from the trackbed looking north-east.
Although work at Wistlandpound has been scheduled for Friday 23rd - the first day of the Winter Work Weekend, and further tree clearance and drainage work is to be carried out on the section at Rowley Bank cleared last winter on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25, it is also intended to re-fence some of the newly purchased trackbed between Rowley Cross and Parracombe. For more details of the Winter Working weekend click HERE
A lot of preliminary work will be required on the trackbed before track laying can begin. This first work party weekend here will help to progress this. All volunteers are welcome, no skills required - just enthusiasm to help rebuilding and extending the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
Contact Martyn Budd or Pete Snashall or email us HEREfor further details or, just turn up at the car park at Wistlandpound on Friday and Rowley Cross Picnic Site anytime on Saturday and Sunday from 10am each day.
