We are pleased and excited to be able to tell you that the new edition of 'The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway' by Brown, Prideaux and Radcliffe is now on sale at Woody Bay.
Since 2018 the Surrey Group has had many discussions about the future of this much-loved book. There was emphatic support for producing the 6th edition on condition that it would be updated to current knowledge and photographs to be reproduced with better resolution. As Phil Rawstron had already added content in the previous edition it was passed to him to see if this was at all possible and, after many hours/days/months (arguably years) work, he has achieved this goal. With huge support from Keith Vingoe who not only supplied newly scanned photos but also many, many amendments to text and captions. Other photographs have been rescanned from the collections of Gordon Brown, Phil Rawstron and Paul Gower.
This edition has also been further updated to include the construction and inauguration of the heritage train, approval of the planning applications to extend the current running line to Blackmoor and Wistlandpound and the start of reconstruction.
Still containing the scale drawings of locomotives and rolling stock along with track plans and building surveys, the 6th edition also enhances the experience of the reader and researcher as an updated chronology and an index has been added. This provides easier access to the 178 pages and the full story of England's most loved narrow-gauge line thoroughly revised to bring the story up to date.
Not only a book for anyone with a general interest in the L&B's history and development, but we also believe for all narrow-gauge enthusiasts and modellers
