Axe nears completion - Photo Album

Work is continuing on Axe at the Gartell Light Railway at Templecombe in Somerset - in preparation for the forthcoming delivery to Woody Bay in just a few weeks time.

Two recent visits to the workshops show how close the L&B is to having its own steam loco in service, for the first time since 1935.

School holiday service

Trains are running from Woody Bay every day this week - during the school holidays - from 27 October to 2 November.  This will be followed by our Armistice Day service on Tuesday 11 November.  Santa Specials will be running on selected days during December.

Justine - our latest steam visitor

The L&B's latest visiting loco, "Justine" arrived at Woody Bay on 3 October.  An 0-4-0T built by Jung in 1906, Justine is on loan from the Gloucestershire Narrow Gauge Railway Company and will provide steam traction until the arrival of  the Trusts own loco Axe. Justine will continue to understudy Axe until the loco is properly "run in". Meanwhile, our resident engine Sid requires some attention to its boiler and motion before returni

Toilet Block Progress

The Woody Bay toilet block - built on the site of, and in the style of, the original sheds - now has a water-tight slate roof. If all goes to plan the toilet block will be in use very soon. A piece of block work salvaged from the original sheds had the date 1910 inscribed into it. This has been incorporated into the new building together with a new block suitably dated 2008.

The workshops at Bratton Fleming have been busy recently with the regauging from 2'6" of two ex MOD bogies from the stored bogie flat wagons that the railway owns.

Summer News Update

We have attended six major events in the first half of this year. The funds raised were initially channelled towards completion of the Water Tank Project. However since we completed that job we have been able to divert our funds towards other ventures.

Work on Woody bay Station's new toilet block is now underway with the first important step - the footings, having now been dug and filled with concrete.

Notice: Competencies

As from Friday 1st August, everyone on the railway working as a Guard, Fireman, Driver or Signalman must have taken and passed the relevant rules assessments for Rule Book issue 3. (This already applies to Controllers).

From this date, for those who have not yet done so, it will be necessary to take the rules assessment prior to carrying out any work in these competencies. This is to ensure the safe working of the railway.
