Taking the L&B Message to Yorkshire

The L&B's North West group achieved a first on Saturday 9 March 2019, by taking their display and sales stand across the Pennines to Pudsey. We had realised that it would be desirable (and feasible) to travel the fifty or so miles to West Yorkshire, given that the L&B already has over fifty members there, but no local area group covers the area.

It is several years since Peter and Bob visited the popular Narrow Gauge North exhibition to meet the organisers and enquire whether they could accommodate our L&B stand at a future show. This show is unusual as it is not organised by a model railway club, but is put on by a group of enthusiasts in aid of a local charity. We were offered a stand at the 2018 show, but unfortunately we had a clash of dates, so they kindly let us attend the 2019 show instead.

We took our banner displays, a range of L&B merchandise, and Bob's 009 scale Chelfham layout.

The layout showed visitors a rapid succession of L&B trains of various periods, several of them utilising the popular ready-to-run L&B rolling stock. Photo: Peter

The show was extremely busy until the early afternoon, the crowds only diminishing as the show's closing time approached. Photo: Sue

There was a lot of interest in the progress being made by the L&B, and we were pleased to meet a number of L&B members from the opposite side of the Pennines to us. We were also able to hand out Membership forms to several visitors who expressed an interest.  One Yorkshire L&B member plans to take L&B publicity leaflets to the very large York show over the Easter weekend, to spread the word further.

We achieved record sales of books and magazines during the day, particularly since Bob's new 009 scale modelling book was on sale for the first time at a show (with profits going to the L&B), and there was great interest in that.

We were conscious during the day that the Thames Valley team were also busy at a show. If only we had a few more groups around the country, we could make sure there was nowhere for prospective L&B members to hide...

We were made most welcome by the Narrow Gauge North team throughout the day, and thanks are due to them and also to our team of Bob and Sue Barnard, Peter Ainley and Dave Prime.

The North West Group's next show will be back on home territory at the 009 Society Show at Rainford, Merseyside on Saturday 30 March.  Bob's L&B construction layout 'Raleigh Weir', as featured in L&B Magazine 117, will be present there.
