Fifteen Devon Group Members and friends enjoyed a successful trip from Barnstaple and Exeter to Totnes for a ride on the South Devon Railway.
Using Devon Day Ranger tickets and Heritage Railway Association passes where possible, from Totnes the group rode up to Buckfastleigh behind GWR 0-6-0 3205.
1. Walking through Buckfastleigh in search of a pub….
2. ….then waiting for lunch at the Globe Inn. We would like to thank the staff at the Globe for all the excellent lunches for such a large group (15) walking in off the street without any prior booking.
3. Outside the Globe prior to returning to the station.
4. ‘Trip leader’ Nigel Thompson was spotted by a namesake business – surely not his!
5. A South Devon Railway scene at Buckfastleigh as Pannier No. 1369 arrives. This loco travelled from Wadebridge to Totnes in February 1965 making it the last working journey of a steam loco in Cornwall back when the railways were nationalized. Read more about the event HERE.
6. Passing another train at Bishops Bridge loop.
7. Back at Totnes Station. A Cross Country Voyager arrives to take the group onwards…..
8. ….in time for another pub visit at Platform Five, Newton Abbot.
(some of us even managed a third pub on the return at the Beer Engine, Newton St Cyres near Exeter!) In all a great trip and well enjoyed all round.
Next local trip will be Wednesday 23 November (possibly Plymouth). Then Wednesday 14 December for a Xmas lunch at Teignmouth. Contact Nigel Thompson for further details
