Devon Group Rail and Ferry Trip to Shaldon

On Wednesday 19th October five Daves and four others enjoyed a local rail trip around South Devon. From Barnstaple to Exeter and then up to Tiverton Parkway. From there we went on to Newton Abbot for a trip to Paignton first.

1. Although some of our trains today were the dreaded Class 143 Pacers, we were lucky to be able to sample a refurbished Class 158 from Paignton. I am led to believe that these more comfortable trains will be operating the Barnstaple to Exeter Tarka Line from next year at some stage!

2. At Teignmouth we strolled down to the harbour to await the Shaldon ferry.

3. Ferry No.4 soon arrived onto the beach here.

4. & 5. The group enjoy their short crossing of the Teign estuary towards Shaldon.

6. Again we alighted from the ferry on the beach.

7. Lunch was outside at the Clipper Cafe with views across to four small ships for clay export loading up in the docks.

8. Beer-time at the Ferryboat Inn, Shaldon as four Daves discuss and debate the latest L&B news around their table.

9. Queuing up for the return ferry back to Teignmouth.

10. & 11. Walking-time along the sea wall. Some trains were observed from the famous viewpoint here.

12. & 13. Trains back via Newton Abbot to Exeter and some sampling of the Wetherspoons Beer Festival at the Imperial near Exeter St Davids.
