Work in Progress: January 6 2011

With the railway closed to passenger trains now, the first of several permanent way jobs this winter was started today.

The rails renewed on the curve near Bridge 67 last November required recovery as many of them are intended for reuse to replace the final short 10-15 foot lengths through the station and loop at Killington Lane Station. The method for lifting these rails was to use the digger on the well wagon to take them down the line and drop into place alongside the track at Killington Lane.

 1. The digger at Killington Lane with rails 'dropped' into the cess ready for next month's rail renewal programme.

 2. The digger lifts the rails near Bridge 67 using chains and strops.

The winter maintenance of rolling stock begun this week with attention to the carriage bogies.

3. Bogie temporarily removed from coach No.1 for maintenance.

 4. Upturned bogie minus wheelset during overhaul.

 5. Most of the old yellow paint has now been removed from the ex-MOD 4-wheel Brake Van undergoing restoration in the shed.

 6. The point rodding concrete bases repositioned last week were packed and backfilled in place.

 7. Close up of the rodding rollers and signal cable pulley.
