Work in Progress: February 3rd

Back to Killington Lane Station today for the volunteers to continue the rail renewal programme. The first job was to finish off connecting the closure rails on the platform line, cutting, drilling and fixing into place.

After lunch work begun on the loop line to de-spike, remove and replace the short lengths with the longer 30' lengths recently freed from last November's trackwork upgrade further down the line at Bridge 67.

1. Dave Drayson and Dave Bloomfield operating the rail drill on the platform line closure rails.

2. Finally fixing the closure rails into place.

3. Richard Willey undoing the fishplate bolts along the loop line.

4. John, Richard and Graham de-spiking the old short rails.

5. The Killington Lane loop is the last remaining track on the L&B's mainline with short rails fixed with spikes. The gang gradually move down the loop moving the old rails out of the way.

6. As the longer rails are laid in place, Graham, John, Richard and Martyn prepare to reconnect a joint.

7. HEDDON HALL with the works train during the rail renewing.

8. Graham, John and Richard connecting up the new rails on the loop.

9. At the moving gap between old (left) and new (right) rails two sleepers needed replacing. Richard and John rest after this work was completed -actually all done by Martyn operating the digger from the well wagon!

10. After two lengths of new rails were fixed in place, spikes are removed from the next short length.

11. More rail drilling for the Daves - this time at the end of the loop as the rail joints are kept parallel.
