Work in Progress: Chelfham January 2013

As Nigel Thompson did not manage to get to Woody Bay this Thursday, he has instead sent us a report of this months volunteering activities at Chelfham.

Throughout January the locally-based volunteers of 'The Friends of Chelfham Station' group have continued progress on the variety of projects in and around the L&BR's second station along the route.

1. John Edmonds with the newly revealed original station window opening. As part of the ongoing internal demolition of the 1960s over-the-platform extension, the plaster and blockwork removal now shows the window position well. The pipework which served the extension's bathroom has since been removed or re-routed and plans are now in hand to construct a new window and frame as per the original.

2. Dave Drayson works in the lounge area, begining to remove the plumbing serving the hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard.

3. An outside view of the corner of the original building, the porch area leading to the washing line with the hanging bird feeders.

4. Bird activity has been busy during January. The resident Woodpeckers, Nuthatch, Tits, Robin, Blackbirds, Finches, Pheasants, Magpies, Pigeons, etc have all enjoyed their weekly feeds. A Willow Tit is seen on the seed feeder with the view down to the Stationmasters house 'Distant Point' below.

5. There have been very few visitors this month to view the photos on the display board. Frank Daff, continues to sort out the
shed.

6. Nigel Thompson keeps warm by the fire inside the building during a break from the ongoing restoration.

7. Towards the end of January, snow fell on Chelfham.

8. Snow falling across Chelfham Viaduct on Wednesday 23rd January 2013.

9. The snow fell heavily for a while onto Chelfham Station and the approach drive.

10. The original down platform SR concrete running-in board posts see yet another winter at Chelfham.

11. The end of the station building looking towards Distant Point.  The edge of the up platform forming a line in the snow.

12. A view from the upper woodland path looking down onto a snowy trackbed.

13. Snow covered ballast on the viaduct, 23rd Jan 2013.

14. Back inside: in the hallway, Dave Drayson removes part of the ceiling between the extension and the original buidling.

15. With the ceiling and plaster removed, the original doorway and window frame beyond are now fully exposed.

16. Next job for Dave and his hammer drill was to remove the plaster from the section on the other side of the fireplace (original doorway).

17. With this plaster removed only the original doorway area remains. This section is the back of the fireplace and chimney breast (on the other side of this wall) in the lounge. Eventually when the extension is demolished, (hopefully
later this year) this doorway will be opened up once again and a new frame and door installed as part of the restoration of Chelfham Station to its original ambience.

18. The sun came out at last and began to melt the surrounding snow at Chelfham.

19.
In this view from the top path, smoke from the chimney is billowing well towards the viaduct on this very cold day

A reminder that Chelfham Station the woodland and trackbed walks will be open - not only to L&BR Trust members but also to anyone else interested in having a look - every Sunday from 11am during the coming months.
