Work in Progress: 28th June

1. AXE arrives at Woody Bay out of the misty conditions on Exmoor this morning.

2. AXE being uncoupled from the train prior to the run round.

3. Driver David Pritchard (left) and Fireman Jim Price concentrate on observing the road as they drive AXE towards the shed.

4. Visiting active members Barbara and Rick Sayers from Hampshire were at Woody Bay today to observe the goings on. (Rick & Barbara are usually at all the special events each year helping with the sales of books and L&B souvenirs)

5. Rick Sayers observes Guard Richard Drewer moving the tail lamp onto the carriage end during a run-round at Woody Bay.

6. At lunch there was time for a quick works train. Newly restored Hunslet Diesel D6652 with a bogie flat waits for the token for a run towards Killington lane.

7. D6652 with the works train at the sleeper stacks. A stack of sleepers used last winter during the drainage works was unloaded onto the sleeper stacks, as the bogie flat wagon needs to be clear ready for another use soon.

8. In the shed John O'Dell works on repairs to the next ex-MoD Box Van - No.61. John sizes up some surplus steel channel cut from the original sliding roof sides.

9. Volunteers have recently been busy polishing up brass coupling valves and pipes for the steam heating apparatus on the heritage coaches. Gradually those in the left tray are being cleaned up to match those on the right.

10. The main job for the Thursday gang was to dig out the measured base for the restored telephone box. The traditional red telephone box has been in the shed recently for cleaning up and repainting. The box is being installed behind the original Gents toilet.

11. Martyn Budd loads aggregate into the cement mixer ready to concrete the telephone box's base.

12. Rick Sayers photographs the gang at work during the concreting.

13. The finished base is left to dry. Cable conduits will allow connection to the network.

14. An overcast afternoon view of AXE with the passenger train approaching Woody Bay.

15. Side on view of AXE as Fireman Jim Price checks the road ahead on the approach.
