Work in Progress 24 March 2011 Revisited

Given that will be no WIP reports for a while, we have gone back in time to March 24th 2011 showing what was going on back then and also featuring some faces from the past.

Enjoy!

We've enjoyed the spring-like weather at Woody Bay this week and in a glorious sunny day today the volunteers completed several more tasks as preparations for the main operating season continue.

1. It was time once again to erect the tea rooms marquee for the forthcoming events and the anticipated busy Easter weekend. Firstly the poles are laid out ready for assembly after the volunteers finish their head scratching as to which poles go where!

2. It wasn't too long before the first frame sections were identified, connected up and laid out prior to erecting.

3. When all the frame sections are assembled and the roof is put on the sides are lifted up in stages to fit the legs on.

4. Later on the marquee is all but finished as Graham B, John V and Martin A enjoy posing for the camera inside the tea rooms marquee.

5. Not everyone was required for the marquee erection. Dave Drayson begins work on wire brushing off the rust formed on the railings fence on the up platform.

6. Dave (left) and Robin Edwards (right) worked on this project today.

7. In the afternoon Dave was able to paint the cleaned railings with a red oxide primer prior to their eventual repaint in SR green.

 8. Richard Willey was tasked with the job of removing ballast from directly underneath the recently repainted point rodding runs to permit easier operation of the points from the lever frame.

 9. At Killington Lane the newly installed ex SR type lever frame looks good against the Exmoor scenery.

 10. Our grateful thanks must again go to our regular S & T volunteers from the Talyllyn Railway who last weekend
installed this more appropriate SR type 2-lever frame. The token key operated facing point lock is now located to the rear and side of the blue FPL lever.

11. The only works train today was HEDDON HALL + Brake Van trip to Killington Lane with some small surplus equipment for storage.

  12. After lunch the digger was in action to remove a small earth bank between the car park and miniature railway.

13. The surplus spoil was moved to reinforce the main hedge boundary between the A39 and miniature railway.

14. Graham landscapes the extended bank whilst John tidies up some spilt earth from the 7.25" miniature railway.

15. Martyn Budd in the digger finishes off removing the earth bank - the area created now allows an easier transhipment for locomotives and stock off road trailers onto the miniature railway as well as another car parking space here.

16. Last weekend the TR volunteers also delivered the regauged wheelsets for the yet to be named Hunslet diesel currently in MOD yellow livery stored in the car park. Work on getting this locomotive into traffic is now a priority project for the engineering team.

17. A rare photograph of regular website news reporter, Nigel Thompson, working on a project. The recently re-gauged ex MOD 4 wheel flat is up turned onto another wagon whilst the brake rigging is also re-gauged. Photographed by Martin Andrews whilst he works on cleaning up the steel work prior to repainting the underside.
