Work in Progress: 21st May

Roadworks TriangleMainly working at Killington Lane today!

1. The Thursday Gang refit a fence near the lever frame. Recently, several visitors with their cameras had been getting too close to the locomotives and track at this point.

2. The next job was to replace a section of fencing, at the border with the railway's land and Killington Lane.
This temporary fencing covers the area which will be excavated when a new road-over-rail bridge is built as part of the railway's extension plans.

3. After lunch, a barbed-wire top was added to complete this short length of fence. Another nearby fence was also improved, helping to keep cattle in the adjacent field.

4. The "limit of shunt" sign was moved further along to allow a longer headshunt during shunt moves particularly at gala events.

5. The "Bridge 66" sign was also moved away from the track, to avoid the risk of collision with the larger locomotives and carriages now in use.
This sign marks the site of what was a cattle creep (Bridge No.66) which had been altered to a drainage gulley even before the railway extended to Killington Lane back in 2006.

6. A bonfire disposed of several old, broken fence posts and scrap sleepers.

7. The bonfire goes well. Alongside is the supply of concrete fence posts recently removed from the lineside, as fencing has been adjusted, using intermediate droppers in place of alternate posts.

8. The ex-MoD Bogie Brake Van has now been sold. The gang clear out a few stored items from the Van.

9. This Brake Van served us well during the construction period 2004-6, then on works trains until 2013. Now out of use the steel body is showing signs of rust and an eyesore at Killington Lane.

10. The air-braked ballast hopper has also been sold. As the railway now uses vacuum-braking, delivery of several suitable wagons new to the railway are expected later this year. Watch this space!

11. A resplendent ISAAC approaches Woody Bay in glorious spring sunshine.

12. Today's footplate crew is trainee fireman, Leon Salter (left), with fireman Andy Foster and driver Pete Williams.

13. AXE was being serviced. Engineer Nick Slade is changing brake blocks.

14. AXE also had a boiler washout.

15. Other work today included Nigel Spencer continuing to clean and repaint the down platform railing fence...

16 ... while Trevor Buck and Don Newnham carried on with more adjustments to the restored tablet instruments.
