Work in Progress - 2 June

With it being Whitsun half-term week with many holidaymakers about, Woody Bay enjoyed a very busy day of visitors and coach parties with over 260 passengers carried today alone.

The Thursday regulars were supplemented by several new recruits this week and all continued the good work around the site and shed including track maintenance, painting the platform railings, working on the new brake van and D6652 the new diesel and various other jobs. The rostered staff were as usual running the railway and generally looking after our customers in their well practiced and efficient way.

1. Len Howse spent the morning painting more of the railings on the up platform.

2. Down the line Martyn Budd and Dave Bloomfield rake off surplus ballast from the sleepers near Bridge 67.

3. AXE with the first train of the day passes the sleeper stacks near Bridge 67.

4. Later AXE is seen leaving Killington Lane on the steep climb back towards Woody Bay.

5. Driver Eddie Mills with AXE at the coaling stage during the run round movement.

6.. The Guard today was Bob Ayres (left) with Alex Pickersgill who helped out with the coach parties.

7. The first Brend coach party queuing for their Devon Cream teas in the marquee.

8. Whilst enjoying their refreshments, Dave Tooke gives a talk on the brief history of the railway and our future plans to extend.  The catering team of Irene Cross and Judy Williams are also glimpsed keeping busy.

9. Don Stone and his St Bernard dog, Bob looking after the Visitor Information 'desk'.   Bob proved to be an attraction in his own right!

10. Hunslet diesels together in the shed. D6652 (still unnamed) under restoration with HEDDON HALL alongside.

11. Tim Gibbs at work on D6652.

12. John O'Dell making further progress on the ex MoD Brake Van.
