Work in Progress - 16 September: Gala Preparations

A busy day at Woody Bay with lots of visitors about. Over 200 passengers enjoyed their ride behind SID to Killington Lane and back.

An extra attraction today for them was to observe the volunteers in action carrying out a variety of jobs as part of the Gala preparations...

Work at Killington Lane.

1. As part of marshalling all the rolling stock out of the way at Woody Bay, an unusual top and tail works train was formed up with the bogie opens loaded with bagged stone, TITCH (still awaiting despatch to new home) and HEDDON HALL.

2. The works train at Killington Hall prior to shunting about.

3. HEDDON HALL shunts the bogie opens into the middle siding at Killington Lane.

4. A very full siding with many wagons stored at Killington Lane.

5. Graham Bendell and Len Howse paint creosote substitute on the waiting shelter.

6. Martyn Budd watches as a new shed is constructed on the original trackbed!

7. This small shed will be used as a shelter for the Killington Lane signalperson/blockman over the Gala.

8. Nearly finished, the shed is observed as the lunchtime train arrives.

9. SID departs for Woody Bay past the shed erectors at work.

Work at Woody Bay

During the Gala, the requirement to keep the Lynton end barrow crossing clear means that the service train (AXE + 4 coaches) will need to stop shorter along the platform than at present.

10. Further hardwood sleepers are laid to extend the platform nearer the track on the up platform.

11. After the visitors had all left this evening, Nigel Thompson paints a white edging line on the platform extension sleepers.

The Surrey Group this week have constructed several freestanding notice boards for this Gala and future special events.

12. Peter Jones paints the top coat green on a board in the improvised factory of notice board construction set up in the shed.

13. Seen from above the completed display boards are lined up whilst the paint dries.
