Today, we replaced some rotten sleepers in the running line. We had only four to replace, so we had a nice easy day. Before the rest of the gang arrived and before the service trains start Martyn Budd and Dave Blencowe delivered the new sleepers where needed.
1. The gang, Richard, Nigel, Martyn, Dave and Dave stand back to allow AXE with the service train to pass.
2. Martyn wheels the permanent way trolly with the tools to the next sleeper in need of replacement.
3. The tools are unloaded so the trolly can be removed from the track.
4. The ballast is cleared from around the sleeper, then Dave unbolts it.
5. The sleeper was marked for replacement as can be seen in this photo (the yellow cross with a circle around it).
6. Nigel rakes out ballast so the new sleeper can slide in.
7. The track is bolted to the new sleeper and then ballast is packed under and around it."
