Work in Progress: 12th December

Unseasonably mild and dry weather today for the couple of jobs to be done at Woody Bay and at Killington Lane.

Words and Pictures: Nigel Thompson

1. Another drainage project taking rain water from the car park required a cross-drain underneath the track to be dug out. Although the excavator had done most of the work, the Thursday Gang were tasked with digging out underneath the rails.

2. We also had to dig out underneath the transhipment siding. John Villers helps to create the trench for the pipe.

3. Soon the trench was ready for the pipe sections.

4. The pipes were laid under both sets of rails.

5. The trench around the pipes was back-filled with chippings, then the stones and ballast were smoothed over the area.

6.  A new L&BR-owned trailer has arrived specifically for transporting the excavator to other parts of the L&B "empire" as required  - saving us the the costs of hiring-in transport.

7. Dick Gunn (right) was on site today re-greasing the movable points and cranks at Killington Lane, ably assisted by Don Newnham (left).

8. After lunch the gang went down to Killington Lane to install the wooden rail fence by the repositioned lever frame.

9. Then it was time to 'creocote' the fence to complete the job.

10. Finished - Dave Evans, John Heys and Nigel Thompson check over the lever-frame site and completed fence in readiness for the use of the guards handling this weekends Santa Specials.

11. Back at Woody Bay the drainage pipe entry from the car park had been concreted.

12. ISAAC was steamed for a Santa Special test train. The volunteers were given their first ride behind ISAAC to Killington Lane.
