RIP Mike Johnson

Just heard the sad news that Mike Johnson, a key mover and shaker in the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) from the mid-late 1970s and early 1980s, has died this week after suffering with cancer for almost a year.

Mike was one of the prime movers in getting the new railway up and running on the then recently occupied Beddgelert Siding site. He was actively involved in procuring rail, sleepers and track materials, with ex-W.D. 75lb per yard flat bottom rail and timber sleepers for the Company’s own use, other rail and materials for onward sale to raise much-needed funds.

Another lasting legacy was his purchase of the two Bagnall steam locomotives that we now know as GELERT and ISAAC, whilst on a visit to South Africa.

Mike’s funeral will be on Monday 5th January 14.00hrs at Crewe Crematorium.

Further information will be posted when available.
