Purchase of Pelloby KDC Mobile Crane

We are pleased to confirm the purchase of a mobile Knock Down Crane (KDC) with a capacity of 5 tonnes. This has been erected outside the Running Shed at Woody Bay. The crane will aid both the lifting of carriage bodies to allow the maintenance and safety checks required of carriage bogies, as well as safely managing other large and heavy components.

The crane is on its own set of rollers and can be moved forwards or backwards in parallel to the track on its own dedicated tracks which are on either side of the railway line providing an accurate and safe vertically aligned lift.

Delivered to Woody Bay in daffodil yellow, the structure has since been repainted in the less visible colour of L&B goods grey. (Photo - Martyn Budd)

The crane complies with the Provisions & Use At Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).

Once our planned Project 2A extension gets underway, the crane will be moved to the railway's new running shed at Blackmoor.

Funding for this procurement was partly supplemented by contributions from the General Manager's Equipment Fund and the 'Charles Wytock' locomotive project team to whom we are very grateful.
