The boiler for E762 LYN the Lynton & Barnstaple Baldwin locomotive is now complete.
Designed by Ian Gaylor and modelled by Mike Nelson, using SolidWorks a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) program and manufactured by Bennetts' Boilers of Highbridge.
The all-welded boiler incorporates many of the latest techniques in boiler design - operating at 250psi, superheated with a larger grate area - it will generate at least 25% more steam than the original.
In early August - under the watchful eye of the Royal Sun Alliance regional boiler manager, Bob Garnett - the boiler was successfully pressure tested at 500psi. Since then the smokebox has been added.
The finished boiler will be on display in September at the Autumn Gala.
With this major phase of LYN's construction completed, attention now turns to finishing the remainder of the locomotive. If LYN is to be seen in steam hauling the heritage carriages in 2015, a further 150 new members are needed. Membership is £762 and this can be paid by monthly instalments of £25.40 - (less than £1 a day).
