Extension work begins

No - not (yet) the trackbed extension towards Parracombe, but the shed extension towards Lynton.

After recent work by volunteers to clear the area immediately behind the stock shed at Woody Bay of stored equipment, and the removal of several wagon-loads of Devon soil, work began yesterday (17 February) on the erection of two additional bays.  The original planning permission, granted in 2003, was for a shed 8m by 35m. The current shed was built to 25m and the remaining 10m is now being added.

Increasing the size of the shed in this way will enable all the Railway's carriages and locomotives to be kept under cover - important now that we have four coaches and two steam locomotives on site, as well as other equipment to store.

Details of the construction show how, when the line is eventually extended towards Lynton, the building can be removed, and re-erected elsewhere.

A few shovels of ballast will obscure the small concrete pads, leaving little if any sign that there had ever been a shed in the Woody Bay Cutting at all.
