Some resumption of restoration work at Chelfham is again possible this month.
This report by Nigel Thompson
In the winter sunshine, we were pleased to receive delivery of 3 new castings of the correct style Evans O’Donnell finials as part of recreating the signals at Chelfham.
1. The 3 finials for the Chelfham signals are displayed here; 'Up' home, 'Up' starter and 'Down' starter.
2. A finial together with an earlier casting of the spectacle plate with a signal arm attached.
Bridport Foundry were contracted to supply the 3 spectacle plates and finials, all made specifically from a casting of the original Evans O’Donnell design.
3. The finials and a signal arm displayed with 2 LSWR style lamp boxes.
We are currently assembling the items required to reproduce these signals. The wooden posts are now in store, seasoning this winter. We already have the counterbalance pivot castings, and an order has been placed for the ironwork required for the ladder and access platforms and guardrails.
Funding has so far been split between the L&BR Trust and private sponsors, but we will always welcome more support from individuals.
