Carriages mothballed until February!

Following the end of the 2014 services on 1st January, our restored L&BR carriages don their winter coats.

Here are some views taken by Dave Tooke of the carriages being fitted with their purpose-made, weather-proof covers designed specifically to protect them from the Exmoor weather. It was vital that the covers went on when the weather was just right - dry and not too windy.

John Uphill and GM Martyn Budd prepare to wrap No.17 whilst Claire Jeans - John's Partner - looks on.

The carriages will emerge chrysalis-like once again ready for the half-term trains in February.

The carriages can still be moved so that winter maintenance can be carried out. This bagging method is frequently used to protect expensive yachts during their winter lay-ups, so this is a tried and tested way to protect any considerable investment and will suffice until such time as we have purpose-built carriage sheds at Blackmoor.
