The 762 Club is pleased to announce that after putting tenders out to the principle UK manufacturers, the contract to build Lyn's boiler has been awarded to Bennett Boilers of Highbridge, Somerset. Bennett Boilers already have experience with Baldwins, having constructed the new boiler for the Greensands Trust's 4-6-0 Baldwin No. 778, built in 1917, based at the Leighton Buzzard Railway.
Several visitors at the recent L&B Gala expressed a keen interest in The 762 Club, but wanted to see the Club commit to "cutting metal". The placing of the order for the boiler is surely tangible enough evidence of our commitment that Lyn will be coming back to the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, and brings the day when we will see the L&B's very own heritage train ever closer!
The boiler contract was awarded on the 13th November 2010 - 75 years to the day after the auction on the 13th November 1935 where ‘Lyn’ was sold for a derisory £50 and smashed up for scrap only a few days later.
This boiler order surely represents one of the most significant milestones in the project to build ‘Lyn’ and put her back in service on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Design work on the locomotive continues apace.
The 762 Club is also a Registered Charity - No. 1139839 - so donations to the project are eligible for Gift Aid - adding 25% to their value!
