Kenneth Deal - In Memoriam

Update 27th May 2012

This just in from Allan Mason:

Thanks to you all again for a wonderful day at Woody Bay. We all had a great time.

Attached is 'Sophie awaiting departure to Killington Lane".  She enjoyed it as well, especially the cake!

Looking forward to seeing Michael Portillo's visit to Woody Bay on the television.

Kind Regards.

Allan

Update 26th May 2012

Whilst staying in Appledore, Ken Deal's niece Brenda Pegg and nephew Allan Mason visited Woody Bay Station during the late morning of Saturday 12th May to scatter Kens ashes on the L&B line - even though Ken had no direct association with the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Trust Treasurer Martin Swainson was on hand hand to take these photos.

"Nearly a week has now passed since my family and I visited your railway for our 'special event' and I take this opportunity to thank you, on behalf of us all, for a wonderful day and for looking after us so well.  We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we know that our Uncle would have much enjoyed his final train journey.  Please pass on our sincere thanks also to Keith, Charles, Tony - Pete and David for looking after me on the footplate - the generous hospitality shown by you all is greatly appreciated.  We met so many people I do hope I have not forgotten anyone!!

We all wish you and your ongoing project every success and hopefully, in the not too distant future, we will be able to revisit the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway to catch up on your progress.

Thank you all for a very memorable day.

With kindest regards and best wishes to you all.

Brenda Pegg

Dear Brenda,

Thank you for this and it was a lovely feeling to know that we had helped in bringing closure, to your bereavement.

Weren't we lucky with the weather? Woody Bay is after all, 1,000 feet above sea level and there is not much between there and Wales.

Kind Regards,

Martin Swainson
L&BRT Hon. Treasurer

Update 27th March 2012

As Ken's family including Sophie, the Staffy/Ridgeback cross - will be staying at Appledore in May, we have invited them to the Spring Vintage weekend.

Before Ken died, he requested that his ashes be scattered on a railway line anywhere in the country and although Ken had no direct association with the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway his family think it would be appropriate resting place. Ken's ashes will be placed in the firebox of one of our locos and its whistle will blow a lament.  This is to occur on the last train trip on Saturday 12th May.

Update 7th March 2012

This just in from Trust Treasurer Martin Swainson

Just  received a further cheque for £25 which brings the total up to £350 in memory of Kenneth Deal

Again, many thanks to his family and friends for supporting our cause.

Update 22nd February 2012

This just in from Trust Treasurer Martin Swainson

Today, I received a cheque from Mrs. E. Murray, to whom I have written a letter of thanks.

The total sum donated to the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in Memorium of Kenneth Deal now stands at £325.

Once again, thank you to his family and friends for choosing the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway as a means of remembering him.

Martin

The L&B Trust recently received the following letter:

Sadly, my 92 year old Uncle has passed away.

Throughout his life he was a locomotive and railway enthusiast and after looking at the many railway trusts, we are most impressed with the work you are doing to reinstate the railway in your wonderful part of England.

Also, we are impressed with your website and especially that you keep it up to date.  We also had a preference for a smaller Trust rather than one of the bigger ones. Consequently, instead of floral tributes at his funeral we have selected the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Trust as the recipient for all donations in Kenneth Deal's memory

---------------------------

Tuesday January 31st

The funeral has now taken place and Ken had a good send off, on a nice sunny day, last Friday. At the end of the funeral service, we said goodbye to Ken to the strains of the Kopenhagener Eisenbahn Dampf Galopp (Copenhagen Railway Steam Gallop) You can see a recent performance of it on YouTube by clicking on this link

Kind Regards.

Allan Mason and Brenda Pegg

Martin Swainson Trust Treasurer handled all the communications with the family and subsequently we received donations totalling £285 which  is to be used to further develop the railway.

The L&B Trust is very appreciative of Ken's family and their kind and generous gesture towards the railway and we intend to create a lasting memory of Ken at Woody Bay in the near future.

Incidentally, the railway featured in the video clip is the Achensee Railway, a four-mile long metre gauge line in the Tyrol region of Austria, and Europe's oldest steam-operated rack railway.
